Reading and Writing the World with Mathematics: Possibilities and Challenges Reading and writing the world with math means to use math as a means to develop sociopolitical consciousness and a sense of social agency (i.e., a belief that one is capable of changing the world). Paulo Freire wrote about this with respect to learning to read text, but not about math. In the U.S. and elsewhere, teachers and math educators have been trying to use his ideas to build on students' cultures and experiences and to help them learn math and become active change agents for social justice. In this talk, I will describe possibilities and challenges in doing this work, especially in urban settings. |

Use and Abuse: Statistics in Sports My thesis advisor use to say, "Don’t be surprised when you give a power tool to a fool and they cut their thumbs off." Statistical analysis is a scientific process, and a lack of understanding of simple statistical ideas creates silly and wrong conclusions. In this talk I will discuss numerous examples where the science of statistics is poorly applied. |
